Brasov is the third-largest city in Romania. Brasov's best sights can be found in the center of the city: Piata Sfatului, a large cobblestone square and the heart of the old Germanic town, is still surrounded in places by the original fortress walls; its buildings recall the region's German heritage. Built in 1420 and once the town hall, the large Casa Sfatului is in the center of the square and houses a historical museum open every day except Monday. The square is surrounded on all sides by shops, cafes, and restaurants; peddlers of different wares, an occasional musican, and colorful gypsies add to the square's liveliness.

Just off Piata Sfatului is the spiraling tower of the Black Church. This Gothic masterpiece was built in the early 15th century. It acquired its name after a fire in 1689 that left it with a black, charred appearance. It is usually possible to tour the church, though it is currently under renovation. The church also houses occasional classical-music concerts. Opposite the Black Church, and across Piata Sfatului, is Strada Republicii. This is a walking streed that provides a wealth of opportunities for shoppers. There are many imported items here, but most important are the artizanat stores - shops that sell handmade Romanian wares including painted eggs, woven rugs, wooden toys, and carvings. The best view of Brasov can be attained by riding the Telecabina Tampa, a cable car that runs from 10 to 6 daily, except Monday, to the top of Tampa. To get to the cable car you can hike through the old section of the city. Leave Piata Sfatului on Strada Apollonia Hirscher. Stroll along to the end of the road, taking a left on Strada Castelului. The next right is Strada Romer. Follow this until it ends and climb the stairs to the cable car. Just below the entrace are remains of the old city wall. A stroll along the wall will take you to the Weaver's Bastion. This is a corner of the old walls dating from 1421-1436. It now holds a museum that is occasionally open to the public.

A 10-minute drive or bus ride outside Brasov brings you to Poiana Brasov, a mountaintop ski resort area that was originally developed for foreigners and top Communist officials. Still somewhat expresive by Romanian standards, it includes several good restaurants and hotels. During the winter months Poiana Brasov is home to some of the best skiing in Romania, though trails are not groomed and ski lifts are limited. In summer, well-marked hiking trails wind along the breathtaking mountainside, and there is a pleasant public swimming pool. Riding the cable car to the top of the mountain provides a view of the Transylvanian plains. Handmade wool sweaters are sold by local peasants in the central parking lot for low prices. Poiana Brasov is a better base for visiting Brasov and the surrounding area because its accommodations are superior.
