Located 160 km from Bucharest, Brasov is surrounded like a halo by the Carpathians, being in the middle of the country at the crossroads of the the Eastern Carpathian and the Southern Carpathians.
Brasov is a charming medieval town, and along with Sighisoara is one of the seven fortified towns settled by the Saxons, with a distinct Germanic flavour to its architecture. The Saxons sited their largest settlements within a day's journey of the Carpathian passes; they built massive stone walls and seven bastions around the city that are still visible today, as well as ornate churches, elaborately trimmed buildings and a fine central square. Brasov was one of the best placed and grew prosperous and fortified as a result, and for many centuries the Saxons there constituted an elite whose economic power long outlasted its feudal privileges.
There are two parts to Brasov: the largely Baroque old town coiled beneath Mount Tâmpa and Mount Postavaru, and the surrounding sprawl of apartment blocks and factories. Old Brasov - whose Schei quarter, Black Church and medieval ramparts provide a backdrop for the town's colourful Pageant of the Juni - is well worth a day's exploration.
Brasov is a tourist city by excellence due to its urban values and as well as to its being the departure point for tourist attractions in the surrounding areas; many people use Brasov as a base for visiting the nearby attractions of Dracula's Castle at Bran, as well as Râsnov Castle, alpine resort of Poiana Brasov , the fortified Saxon churches of Harman and Prejmer and the ski resorts of Sinaia and Poiana Brasov.
