10 Travel Tips For Visiting Romania

Dracula’s Castle: the mere mention of its name conjures up images of dark corridors, deep dungeons, and stormy nights. Vampires, Werewolves, and other such images are quickly brought to mind. This is the imagery that Hollywood would have us think of when the name Dracula is mentioned. Nestled in the countryside of a region of Romania called Transylvania, Bran Castle is anything but scary. This amazing mansion has a detailed history all its own, which, ironically, has very little to do with the man or the myth called Dracula. Located approximately 30 km from the city of Brasov, Bran Castle and the surrounding village are surrounded by the forests and mountains in the Danube River valley. Built as a medieval fortress to protect from invaders, and later converted into a royal residence, Bran Castle silently guards the local villagers and is shrouded in mystery. The fortress itself was strategically built to defend Brasov from invaders. Constructed at the mouth of the Brasov gorge, this fortress controlled the flow of traffic, and incidentally, armies, click, from the south, keeping the northern areas safe from invasion. Although it was considered a major fortress during the reign of Vlad Tepes (otherwise known as Dracula), there is no evidence to support that Dracula ever held residence in the fortress or even visited here. Most of his dealings with this area were via letter, as Brasov was a major connection for all mail delivery in Romania. There is a rumor that Vlad was once imprisoned in the fortress, however there is no evidence to support such a claim. Whether you are visiting to try to see life through the eyes of Dracula, or for the picturesque mountain scenery surround the area, Bran Castle stands to delight you and ignite the imagination. Take a trip to this historic location and transport yourself to a time gone by.
